How to teach people to have a healthy lifestyle intrigues me for a long time, but became more important to me in the last 2 years. This specific field of education opens possibilities for a designer as visuals play an important part in how motivated we learn. Creating and structuring information for learning purposes does not only require responsibility for a careful execution, but also empathy during the whole design process.

Project: Visual research on the Yoga Sun Salutation

The project was about considering existing learning principals coming from the pedagogical discourse and using them to create a visual guide for Yoga instructions.

The starting point was the analysis of existing learning material (beginners level) for the ‘Ashtanga Yoga Sun Salutation’. Own material was developed in order to execute different experiments. The execution of the different postures require visual information, and it is essential how one can relate to this information to be able to imitate the poses.

The visual experiments show different angles of the perspective to find out which depicts each position the best way. The angles were compared and analysed. Another important aspect was the graphical way of visualising the flow and the transitions from one key position to another and how they are highlighted. Specific poses were extracted to study the movement more in detail. For example, only the movement of the ‘Forward Fall’ generated several different possibilities.
